“Every one of our design choices set out to restore the centuries-old harmony between man and the land in these hills, allowing the landscape to suggest the stylistic approach, proportions, materials, and composition” says Giovanna Mar, owner of Architetti Mar in her presentation of the genesis of Monteleone21, the Masi winery’s new headquarters in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella.

Published by THE PLAN Editions, this bilingual Italian-English monographic volume tells the story of a project deeply rooted in the land and values that make Valpolicella, an area with a centuries-long heritage of fine winemaking, unique.

Monteleone21 strikes up a dialogue with the surroundings, using local materials and an architectural language inspired by the traditional marogne dry-stone walling that supports the terraced vineyards round here.

The monograph guides readers through the entire design process, from interpreting the landscape to defining volumes, from constructing the interior spaces to orchestrating their relationship with natural light, as well as the architectural details that reinterpret tradition in a contemporary way. The book’s rich array of photographs, drawings, and written contributions conveys the essence of a project that blends innovation, a deep connection to place, and attention to detail.

The publication was conceived to illustrate how Monteleone21 became a new flagship destination in Valpolicella. The architecture celebrates local history and, while adopting a sensitive and respectful approach to the local context, opens a window onto the future.

“We were keen to actively integrate the architecture into the surroundings,” concludes Giovanna Mar. “To achieve this, we worked with natural light, the local climate, and the landscape’s changing colors to devise a space in never-ending transformation, a space that evokes emotions, tells stories, and reveals the site’s deeper identity in a new way.”
