If we were in Rome, it wouldn't be strange to sit down to enjoy an espresso in an orangerie, enveloped by citrus scents and exotic plants. However, in Milan, only if you're lucky enough to gain access to a courtyard in one of the sumptuous city-centre buildings ‒ the sort that is concealed and secret ‒ can you stumble upon one of these oases (even if a private garden did recently become accessible to the public: Poldi Pezzoli House-Museum in Via Manzoni).
This is also why, if you fancy spending an hour immersed in nature, we recommend going to Milan's Fuorisalone 2022, and more specifically to the fifth edition of dOT-design Outdoor Taste ‒ the most prominent and eagerly awaited event pivoting on outdoor design & living. From 7 to 12 June at dOT, in the heart of the Brera Design District, the square in front of the San Marco basilica and its cloisters will be transformed into a large open-air parlour hinging on wellness and outdoor socialising. A fluid circuit of outdoor settings meandering through open-air rooms and vegetation invading the church cloisters, where artisans' skills intertwine with original designer shows placing bathrooms in the limelight.
The theme to this edition of dOT is water. Here's where to go and what to see, exploring lush nature, outdoor design and tasteful finishing touches.

This year the Fuorisalone is offering, at dOT-design Outdoor Taste, a 700m2 urban oasis filling the square in front of Milan's time-honoured San Marco basilica: a luxuriant garden traced out with designer settings and enticing atmospheres. The exhibition and sensory path also weaves through the cloisters, which showcase special items embodying culture, skills and the local area and the dOT Bathroom show.
As an official Brera Design District and Fuorisalone.it event, dOT will model settings emerging from artful equilibrium, providing visitors (sector operators, designers, architects, companies, home & garden lovers, developers, hotel owners) with a palette of top-notch solutions responding to new living habits and design approaches: these transform the layout and balance of home and hospitality spaces, erasing the boundaries between inside and outside, to create new exciting 'open rooms' where fluid living is the hallmark.
The theme to the 2022 edition of dOT is water. A gentle stream will flow through wellness pools, steam rooms, a little pond and visual effects, to accompany designers, companies, the contract world and nature and open-air enthusiasts on a journey into surprising green contexts made up of clumps of firs, rows of agapanthus, weeping willow copses, cacti groupings and flowers in Very Peri tones. These will create ‒ from the floorings to the roof elements, sweeping through collections of furnishings, accessories, lighting, pergolas and orangeries ‒ various rich mixes of inspirations, ideas and quality solutions for living and enjoying 'rooms' in the open air (gardens, balconies, terraces, patios, rooftop areas, loggias).

The path meandering through ever-changing micro-landscapes, reception facilities, relaxation gazebos, walkways, outdoor cooking areas and open-air living rooms then leads into the cloisters, to explore dOT Bathroom ‒ the newest exhibition of designs for this space.
The show has been created by a pool of seven architects and designers (Fabrizio Batoni, Eleonora Castagnetta, Giulio Ceppi, Carlo Donati, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Simone Riva, Maurizio Varratta) invited to rework the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles in a contemporary key in seven bathroom settings, and will also spotlight a selection of products and materials for bathroom furnishings and fixtures.
Nearby, beneath the colonnade, will be the dOT Contract Café - a space for stimulating interviews with architects, designers and companies to discuss materials, visions and predictions on a broad scale, from product design to interior architecture and urban planning.
