Beyond the physical limits of a single place, Venice, and beyond the temporal limits of the Architecture Biennale, from 20 May to 26 November, the Italian Pavilion of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition was born, the pre-opening of which will be on 18 and 19 May 2023. Officially presented in Rome at the Ministry of Culture in the presence, among others, of Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and the president of the Venice Biennale, Roberto Cicutto, the project is a condensation of novelty and innovation with respect to traditions more consolidated: for the first time, in fact, the curatorship is by a collective of young architects, Fosbury Architecture, its extension is destined to last over time by virtue of the relationships and ties that have been created from the beginning of 2023 to today and even further.
The guys from Fosbury – Giacomo Ardesio, Alessandro Bonizzoni, Nicola Campri, Veronica Caprino and Claudia Mainardi, all born between 1987 and 1989 – conceived the Italian Pavilion in two moments and in several places, so as to reach a wider audience. The first phase, preparatory to the second and called Spaziale presente, led to the creation of nine site-specific interventions and installations in as many Italian locations between January and May signed by groups of young architects and designers under 40, to then arrive at the second with the Actual pavilion for the edition of the exhibition curated by Lesley Lokko. Spaziale. Everyone belongs to everyone else – this is the definition for the Italian Pavilion taken from a quote by Aldous Huxley – it will therefore be the result and the union of the experiences lived in these months preceding the inauguration of the event, an installation that will reflect a sense of architecture as an integration of space, of human relationships and fusion with the environment, therefore also a design bet of collaboration and intertwining between different projects and young minds.
In both moments of the project the term "spatial" returns, understood by the boys of the collective in a very specific sense: «Space is understood as a physical and symbolic place, a geographical area and an abstract dimension, a system of known references and a territory of possibilities»; an architecture, in other words, not as an end but as a means to design a space-fabric of relationships, lives and humanity. With a so-called expanded temporal perspective, the Italy Pavilion has already highlighted its prerogative of transforming its resources into an investment for the future.
