Designed by Juan Saez Pedraja and Production Club for the Beverly Hills home of a private client with a strong connection to digital culture, The Sound Cave recording environment exudes an
industrial-style atmosphere, with troweled concrete floors and linear neon-style luminaires – even graffiti on the bathroom walls. Tucked away in the residence’s semi-sunken level and entirely custom-built, this small recording studio is a tribute to underground culture. Commissioned by the owner, a video game developer and electronic music enthusiast, to fit into the space once occupied by a gym, the studio is accessible from the basement but also connected to the upper-level living spaces. Equipped with professional acoustic and recording technology – curated by Production Club, a multidisciplinary studio based in Los Angeles – The Sound Cave frequently plays host to major electronic and pop artists who come to record their albums.
While architect Saez Pedraja is no stranger to recording environment design, this underground space holds special significance for its profoundly immersive meaning in both the physical and figurative sense. Small and compact, the studio is designed to meet a specific function, its formal language, materials and color scheme in keeping with the electronic music produced there. All the interiors – a main recording studio, a smaller vocal booth, which also doubles as a drum room, bathroom, and corridor connecting the various spaces – play on the commonalities shared by music and architecture: rhythm, proportion, and harmony of form. Every aspect of the environment is also compliant with the stringent acoustic requirements demanded of a recording studio.
It follows that timber features large in the fit-out: 1,100 curved wooden slats, CNC-cut and shaped to resemble sound waves, cover the interior walls of the main room. Reaching to a height of 3 m, the paneling covers both walls and ceiling. The...
