Majid Al Futtaim Mosque
By Editorial Staff -

A place of worship that epitomizes the encounter between Islamic tradition and sustainable contemporary architecture, the Majid Al Futtaim Mosque has become a reference point for the community of Tilal Al Ghaf, a prestigious residential complex in Dubai. Designed by Kettle Collective, an international practice operating between the United Kingdom and the Arabian Peninsula, the project approaches spirituality as a part of people’s daily and social lives with a design that gradually leads from the public space to the sacred heart. Two plazas around the building – one with seating and a basketball court next to the minaret, the other conceived as a tree-lined gathering place – help frame the mosque as a shared community space. The colonnade on the main façade transitions into the interior, with a du’a – a traditional invocation to Allah – carved on the wall marking the entry to the religious space. Inside are prayer halls for men and women, residences for the imam and muezzin, and several rooms for meetings and functions.

The project is deeply rooted in its context. A square plan references the geometries of Islamic architecture, while the image of the native Ghaf tree – a symbol of peace and contemplation – repeats in the carved motifs on the façade and in the typical mashrabiya screening that filters daylight, creating evocative patterns of light inside. This symbolism extends to the commitment to the local environment and sustainability, with the mosque being the first net-positive religious building in the region, achieved through strategies that minimize resource use and environmental impact. A sculpture at the entrance by artist eL Seed, whose work fuses Arabic calligraphy and street art, reflects the nature of the project in the way it unites the religious, cultural, and social dimensions, while merging tradition and modernity into a single architectural vision.
