Renewing an Industrial Legacy
By Editorial Staff -

Dock Shed, the first permanent commercial building within London’s Canada Water Masterplan, has opened. This major regeneration project is transforming the former port district of Rotherhithe into a new urban center. In a setting that, in centuries past, was defined by its crowded network of commercial timber docks, the architecture recalls the site’s industrial past by reinterpreting the historic timber deal shed warehouses. Distinguished by its steel Pratt trusses, sawtooth roof, and twisted flat steel balusters, the six story volume brings together a wide range of programs: a large Southwark Council-run leisure center on the basement levels, including pools and sports areas; 16,700 sq. m of flexible workspaces; and a permeable first floor that connects to the waterside landscape and surrounding pedestrian routes. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the building integrates coherently into the broader development plan, which includes residential and commercial parcels, and uses sustainable construction strategies aligned with the program’s environmental goals.

Within this architectural framework, Conran and Partners designed the interiors of the ground floor café and the lobby – a 7 m high space conceived as both a public threshold and an operational and social extension for building users. The starting point of the design was a direct reference to the docklands’ history, with an industrial esthetic expressed through raw finishes, exposed bolts, oxidized surfaces, and hand polished tables that retain the irregularities of the craft process. Chosen for their tactile qualities, the materials set an intentionally raw register intended to convey warmth and authenticity. The lobby is not rigidly subdivided but organized in sequences, with a more open, communal zone at the center surrounded by quieter areas with seating that fosters privacy and calm.

Floor-to-ceiling curtains balance the volume and improve acoustics. Material-driven installations in sisal and cotton descend from the ceiling in vertical waves – sculptural elements that modulate light while implicitly referencing the ropes, knots, and braids of the port tradition. Inspired by a fallen tree, a hand carved wooden bench in front of the reception space introduces an organic tone that contrasts with the industrial character of the setting. The furniture adds color to a palette dominated by natural finishes, dark wood, rattan, and greenery. The polished concrete floor reinforces the site’s identity, while steel stairs and large openings framed by greenery complete the visual composition.

Conceived as a hybrid space – entry, café, and meeting place – the Dock Shed lobby features a design language that combines industrial memory, contemporary craft, and programmatic flexibility. It adapts to the needs of diverse communities while expressing, with coherence and restraint, the contextual complexity of its original landscape.
