A Bridge Between Architecture and Nature

Flat Window

A Bridge Between Architecture and Nature

In contemporary architecture and interior design, windows have moved far beyond their traditional technical role. Today they function simultaneously as esthetic, emotional and practical elements.

PB Finestre sul mondo has followed this development firsthand, refining its systems over time through continuous technical and design innovation. Flat is a clear expression of this trajectory. The window was originally developed as a bespoke solution for a New York penthouse, where it created a visual bridge between architecture and nature – linking the interior living space with the skyline of the Big Apple. Natural light and outward views became the true protagonists of the living space. The defining qualities that emerged in that first project were preserved and developed to achieve the final version of Flat that was introduced in 2008 and became part of the catalog. The result is a system that integrates elegantly into a wide range of architectural contexts while balancing esthetics, sustainability and user well-being.

Material is the defining element of Flat. Its profiles – slender and clean – can be configured in several ways but always retain wood as their constant, combining the warmth and performance of the material with an ultra-modern line and design. In this way, the window moves beyond the purely technical function it once had and becomes an integral part of the architectural project. It helps define spaces and their organization, establish visual and spatial connections, and enhance everyday living through natural light – offering more room for the view with minimal bulk. Despite its innovative nature, Flat adapts easily to a wide range of interior and architectural styles, from more classical settings to modern and contemporary environments, making it both compositionally versatile and materially expressive.

Several configurations are available to meet the design needs of architects and designers: all-wood, wood-aluminum, Bold wood-aluminum and wood-glass, each offering high levels of performance and durability. Profile sizes range from 60 to 105 mm, and versions with traditional glazing beads are also available for interiors where a historic or traditional look remains central. Design freedom also extends to the range of opening types, which includes casement, arched, sliding and special openings. A final technical feature sets Flat apart in the world of timber windows: despite being made of wood, the system can accommodate sashes weighing up to 200 kg and reaching heights of up to 4 m. With Flat, simplicity takes on even greater value.
