New Light for a Family Home in Los Angeles

The project expands and redefines the home through carefully calibrated proportions, natural materials and a contemporary spatial language

In Los Angeles, California, Gianpiero Gaglione Interior Design transforms a large traditionally styled home into a contemporary domestic environment designed for a family with three daughters.

The project involves a significant expansion of the living area alongside a deep reconfiguration of the interiors, with the aim of opening the house to natural light while shaping a home that feels refined, balanced, and welcoming.

Rewriting Light and Volumes

The most substantial structural intervention consists of the addition of 186 square metres and the introduction of three new bedrooms. The L-shaped layout embraces the large inner garden – complete with a swimming pool, sports court, garage, and vegetable garden – creating a clear yet permeable boundary between the domestic interior and the outdoor space.

One wing of the plan accommodates the daughters’ bedrooms together with the primary sleeping quarters, while the other contains the expansive family living area and guest rooms. This arrangement clearly separates the private spaces from those dedicated to hospitality and social life, ensuring privacy while maintaining visual continuity with the garden throughout the home.

At the heart of the project is the large family room, created by demolishing the wall that enclosed the staircase adjacent to the guest rooms. This structure had previously limited the amount of natural light entering the interiors: its removal made it possible to introduce a dramatic vertical void connecting the two floors, filled with daylight streaming through the large upper windows.

A similarly transformative intervention reshaped the formal living room and dining room, where flat ceilings were converted into vaulted gable ceilings, restoring both proportion and spatial openness to the interiors.

A Measured Transitional Atmosphere

Materiality
defines the emotional character of the entire project. The clients requested interiors that would feel bright, grounded, and welcoming. The designer responded primarily through the extensive use of natural materials: in the kitchen and bathrooms, zellige tiles are paired with naturally veined marble, while all custom millwork is crafted from solid wood, entirely free of laminates.

The overall palette is light and luminous, built around neutral yet richly layered tones. While the main rooms maintain a restrained and cohesive atmosphere, secondary spaces – including the guest bedrooms, mudroom, and powder room – introduce bolder decorative and chromatic variations. Botanical wallpapers, layered patterns, and carefully placed colour accents add visual depth throughout the interiors.

The design process itself developed through a highly tactile approach, with fabrics, textures, and materials selected through careful hands-on research. The result is a layered domestic landscape capable of balancing tradition and contemporaneity, creating an atmosphere designed to evolve alongside the everyday life of the family inhabiting it.
