Located on a ten-hectare site in a central district of Madrid, the workspaces for Acciona’s new international headquarters— a global company active in infrastructure and renewable energy — were designed by architecture firm Perkins&Will with the aim of reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and well-being

The project transformed a decades-old corporate campus, regenerating the area with landscape interventions and new facilities for 4,000 employees. The campus includes three office buildings, among them a new building designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects with interiors by Perkins&Will, as well as an auditorium and additional amenities. Two of the original buildings underwent extensive renovation: the interventions enhanced existing structures and materials, reinterpreting them in a contemporary way through bright, flexible, and technologically advanced environments.Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

The Acciona Campus is conceived as a benchmark for a new idea of the workplace, where the company’s global expertise in renewable energy and infrastructure is translated into spaces that foster collaboration, creativity, and well-being. Advanced technologies and sustainable design are not ancillary elements, but fully integrated tools that directly contribute to both business performance and environmental responsibility.Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

«By working in harmony with the existing structures and embracing natural elements, we created a workplace that is both timeless and future-facing,” explains Mijail Gutierrez, Design Lead at Perkins&Will. “Acciona wanted a space that embodied its values and mission: we achieved this through a serene, light-filled aesthetic that celebrates light, shadow, air, and water, fostering a deep connection between people, nature, and the brand’s mission to build a sustainable future».Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

At the heart of the project is the human experience. The spaces are designed to encourage interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration, with flexible work environments, coworking areas, and event spaces. Interconnected staircases and shared areas promote informal encounters, while outdoor pavilions and terraces provide green retreats with panoramic views. Lighting designed around circadian rhythms, together with acoustic and thermal comfort, supports employee well-being.Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

The interior language plays on the contrast between raw materials — such as concrete, galvanized metals, and masonry—and more refined surfaces. A restrained palette of white, wood, and reflective materials references Spanish vernacular architecture and creates a calm, luminous atmosphere in which the dialogue between light and shadow becomes a key design element. Architectural interventions draw natural light deep into the interiors, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and improving visual comfort. Organic, sculptural forms shaped by light generate chiaroscuro effects that make the spaces ethereal yet warm and welcoming.

A new global campus integrating environment, technology, and flexibility

From an environmental standpoint, the campus meets the highest international standards, earning LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications, and operates entirely on electricity from renewable sources, thanks to on-site photovoltaic systems, geothermal installations, and heat-recovery technologies. Modular design supports adaptability and waste reduction, while the use of local wood, antimicrobial metals, and low–carbon-emission materials strengthens the project’s sustainable footprint. Technological innovations include 3D-printed furniture, custom ceiling fans developed with the company’s innovation lab, and robotic systems supporting security and logistics.Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

The landscape design also reflects a strong commitment to the environment and employee well-being. Historic pine groves were preserved and expanded, with the planting of 1,000 new trees and 20,000 shrubs, prioritizing native and climate-adapted species. Rainwater reuse and greywater recycling systems support sustainable water management, while natural meadows replace traditional lawns, improving soil health and reducing erosion. Sede internazionale di Acciona - Perkins&Will © Timothy Soar, courtesy Perkins&Will

The result is a campus that integrates nature, technology, and environmental responsibility into a model whose greatest strength lies in the coherence between stated values and the built environment.
