The Louis Vuitton Experience “lands” at Heathrow

At Terminal 2 of London’s airport, a volume inspired by an aircraft fuselage transforms the space into a fluid environment where retail and dining merge

At Terminal 2 of London Heathrow Airport, the project for Louis Vuitton by the architecture studio Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY, in collaboration with Louis Vuitton Architecture, does more than simply occupy a space - it transforms it into a narrative experience where design, fashion, and gastronomy converge in a single formal gesture.

Like an aircraft fuselage that appears to have landed inside the terminal, the structure is not merely an aesthetic metaphor but a design principle guiding the entire intervention. This sculptural volume houses Le Café by Cyril Lignac and extends to become the façade of the Louis Vuitton store, creating a continuous envelope that seamlessly connects retail and dining.

In this context, dominated by the constant flow of travelers, architecture takes on the role of mediator. Fornes’s organic language translates into an open, legible form capable of integrating different functions.Louis Vuitton al Heathrow Terminal 2 - Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY © Henry Woide, courtesy Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY

The envelope is not just a skin, it is a layered system in which an inner volume separates the café space from the outer surface, creating a cavity that functions as an air plenum. The result is a non-conventional ventilation strategy that involves both the venue and the terminal corridor.Louis Vuitton al Heathrow Terminal 2 - Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY © Henry Woide, courtesy Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY

The structure’s porosity - reaching nearly fifty percent in its lower section - is not a decorative effect but a performance -driven feature. The perforations are integrated into the construction logic of the envelope, balancing ventilation, strength, and spatial clarity. This approach recalls the engineering precision of aeronautics, also evident in the ultra-thin aluminum panels and exposed rivets - details that reinforce the project’s material and symbolic coherence.Louis Vuitton al Heathrow Terminal 2 - Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY © Henry Woide, courtesy Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY

From a distance, the structure appears light, almost in motion, with its continuous curvature and aerodynamic profile. As one approaches, a refined network of elements and connections emerges, engaging in dialogue with the brand. The oculus at the top ultimately synthesizes function and form: a structural element, technical device, and architectural sign that integrates safety systems, lighting, and mechanical installations into a single gesture.Louis Vuitton al Heathrow Terminal 2 - Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY © Henry Woide, courtesy Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY

Inside, Le Café offers a moment of pause within the terminal’s constant movement. Carefully calibrated openings allow for glimpses and visual connections, maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the terminal while preserving a more intimate atmosphere.
