Set among green hills in the province of Limburg, not far from the regional capital of Maastricht, the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten is one of over 25 cemeteries managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Rotterdam-based firm KAAN Architecten has designed a new visitor center for the cemetery, including service areas, restrooms, and an exhibition space. A tranquil mood sets the scene, stemming from both the surrounding landscape and the architecture itself.
The building, which at first glance appears light and ethereal, is defined by extensive glazing – not only on the façades but also internally, where glass is used as partitions between different spaces. In its constant contact and dialogue with concrete, wood, and natural stone, glass forms a delicate, sophisticated balance.
As architect Bas Barendse points out, the importance of this architecture not only lies in its historical and commemorative value but also in the way it reflects on and highlights the dynamics that shaped the Europe of today: “The center doesn’t detract from the value of the site; on the contrary, it enhances and amplifies it.” And the project was carried out with deep respect for its setting, using lines and proportions that harmonize with the context.
The heart of the new complex is the central floating volume, which houses an auditorium, service areas, and restrooms. Fully glazed walls allow the landscape to penetrate the interior. The roof and elements surrounding the center, including the stepped terraces, are light-colored concrete and confer a solemnity and elegance to the building.
“Set approximately 90 cm below ground level, the first floor of the visitor center offers a unique perspective of the gardens,” the architect added. “The façades therefore rise only slightly above ground level, creating a floating effect”.
FritsJurgens made a significant contribution to this ambitious project by supplying its elegant System M+ product for the glass entrance doors. “This pivot system stands out for its technical quality and refinement”, explained project manager Jeroen Iemhoff. “Since it only needs a 40x80 mm floor plate and matching ceiling plate, the system gave the architects and designers real design freedom. The product features an elegantly gentle movement with little effort, can be installed in a variety of situations, is easy to use, low maintenance, durable, and reliable”.
