Located in Karaka, a rural area south of Auckland, New Zealand, this home is a declaration of love and respect for nature and the surrounding hilly landscape. Its design, the result of a harmonious balance between architecture and nature, is as gentle and environmentally respectful as it is innovative. The home’s setting in lush, largely pristine green surroundings plays a central role both outside and, with expansive glazing, inside. The garden, conceived as an oasis for peace and relaxation, was designed as the nerve center of daily life – an open‑air living room complemented by a swimming pool and an intermediate zone between indoors and outdoors.

This is where Sunroom made a key contribution to the project by supplying the Oskura Orienta pergola, chosen for its ability to control sunlight and ventilation, while combining functionality with elegance. Positioned between the home and the pool, the pergola defines the space with its essential, sculptural lines. Minimal, layered geometries characterize its design, which also strikes a harmony with the architecture of the home. The pergola combines functionality with comfort, with its adjustable aluminum louvers making it possible to vary exposure to the sky, sun, shade, privacy, light, and views throughout the day. “We wanted a space that was informal but also featured craftsmanship and designer looks,” explained the owners. “A welcoming place where we could relax and enjoy the outdoors without distractions.”

Overall, the home communicates a reverence for its natural setting. Its materials recall the tones of the earth and local plant life, while establishing uninterrupted visual connections with the expansive views. Materials also play a key role in the way the home integrates with nature, with extensive glazing alternating with textured cladding to balance transparency and privacy in an intimate merging of the art of light and the art of materials.
