In the quiet hills of San Diego’s Mission Hills, a new residence rises like a vision from another time. Castle Ferreira is a private home inspired by Gothic Revival architecture, yet infused with the theatricality of contemporary life. Conceived by homeowner Jeffrey Jordan and brought to life by IS Architecture and Basile Studio, the project reinterprets medieval grandeur through a contemporary lens—where atmosphere, memory, and craftsmanship converge.

From the street, the house makes a formidable impression: towering limestone walls, arched portals, and a fortified massing evoke the gravitas of European castles. The material choices, however, reveal a deeper layer of intent. Sourced from Portugal and carved by fourth-generation stonemasons, the limestone cladding is the result of a meticulous global search for both texture and tone.
Within the courtyard, a chapel complete with flying buttresses and a confessional booth extends the historical language. Antique doors and centuries-old cobblestones reclaimed from French streets further root the architecture in tangible, time-worn authenticity.

The interiors unfold as a sequence of theatrical spaces. A vaulted entry hall sets the stage, followed by a dark-toned dining room and the chapel’s ecclesiastical gravitas. From there, a cloistered staircase descends into a dramatically different realm: a vaulted subterranean ballroom that transforms into a private nightclub, complete with DJ booth, performance stage, VIP balcony, and a sculptural organ pipe bar.
Beyond a concealed door, the journey continues into a secret bar shaped by Jordan’s Peruvian heritage, culminating in a subterranean grotto spa. Every threshold offers a shift in atmosphere, each space contributing to a unified yet unpredictable narrative.
Throughout, the material palette reinforces the medieval vision without slipping into cliché. Aged brass, carved wood, marble, and leather give weight and texture to the interiors, while vintage doors and architectural salvage add narrative depth. The result is a residence rooted in historical language, yet calibrated for a lifestyle of celebration and performance.

Every element is designed to transport—from the secret passageways and soundproof tunnels to the careful interplay of light, texture, and sound. “I wanted a space where people could get lost,” says Jordan, who sees the house as both a home and a platform for experience. Events at Castle Ferreira often span multiple rooms and moods, turning a single evening into a layered narrative of discovery.
But beyond spectacle, the project carries a social mission. With The Castle Ferreira Foundation now underway, the home is evolving into a cultural platform—hosting events that support the arts and LGBTQ+ communities. In this sense, Castle Ferreira is more than an architectural statement: it is a living structure designed to inspire, connect, and transform.
Rooted in legacy yet shaped by imagination, Castle Ferreira stands as a deeply personal monument—part architectural homage, part cultural statement, and entirely unlike anything else in Southern California.
