Sophysa’s New Corporate Facility: Anatomy Meets Architecture

The French neurosurgical implant manufacturer expands its facilities with a project marked by surgical precision

In an industrial zone just outside downtown Besançon in eastern France, Métra + Associés has created a new facility for Sophysa, a French company that designs and manufactures neurosurgical implants and neuromonitoring systems.

Needed following strong growth over recent years, the building provides the firm with an additional 5,800 m2 of floor space over three levels, paving the way for tripling its production capacity and doubling on-site staff numbers.

The new structure adjoins the existing 2007 building, also designed by Brigitte Métra, seamlessly extending it aesthetically, structurally, and functionally.

The project’s guiding principle was to remain faithful to the company’s identity while integrating the architecture into its environment in a dialogue between nature and culture – a hallmark of Métra’s work. The environment was front and center, with the building incorporating a sustainable air-source heat pump system that contributes to it achieving near-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Medicine, anatomy, architecture

To faithfully reflect Sophysa’s image, the architecture embodies parallels with the medical and anatomical fields. The use of glass and steel, for example, evokes precision, cleanliness, and surgical asepsis. Meanwhile, recalling the responsiveness of human skin, the façade has long louvers that tilt according to the position of the sun and expansive glazing that fills the body of the building with light and vitality.

The internal plan also mirrors the body’s functional precision. The first floor houses offices, meeting rooms, and staff facilities. The second floor is then organized so that all its spaces converge into a central cleanroom – the complex’s aseptic 700 m² nerve center, which is visible from outside through the glazed walls.

With its panoramic views, large conference facility, and training areas, the third floor is for the reception of guests and visitors. A large entry atrium connects the levels vertically, drawing the eye upward to kaleidoscopic reflections in the mirrored ceiling. Finally, the outdoor space offers staff open-air breakout areas while creating a gradual transition between the complex’s exterior and interior.

Seamless integration

A key design challenge of this second building was its integration with the existing architecture. Set parallel to the first building, the new structure merges into the complex with surgical precision. The effect is total mimesis, with a glazed connector that subtly connects the two parts. A future third building, intended for logistics, will complete the campus.

This project is a harmonious, vibrant complex that goes beyond being simply a manufacturing facility to become an integrated expression of the company’s identity.
