Interconnected nuclei house the nursery and kindergarten, creating a learning environment open to the landscape and community
Set in the Euganean Hills not far from Padua, the Valbona Early Childhood Center by Colucci&Partners Architettura replaces an existing school building with a complex that combines a nursery and kindergarten in a single spatial and educational system.
The design is based on the idea that continuity between the stages of early childhood is simultaneously chronological, spatial, and relational. This principle informs every architectural decision, from the interior layout to the relationship with the surrounding historical landscape.

The plan uses cluster-based organization. The nursery, for children ages zero to three, and the kindergarten, for ages three to six, are designed as autonomous yet interconnected nuclei that make up a broader system that supports educational continuity. Each nucleus is organized into three independent sections with restrooms, learning spaces, and areas for meals and naps.

The central commons form a single continuous space linked by the entrance portico to create a fluid sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces for children, teachers, and families to gather. This layout reflects current education theory by prioritizing educational continuity over the traditional school as a standalone structure.

The ecosystem concept also translates into the interiors, where the design focuses on the affective and sensory dimensions. In the nursery, a gabled ceiling evokes the archetypal form of a home to create a domestic and secure atmosphere for the children.
In the kindergarten, the transition between the central commons and the workshops features a barrel-vaulted ceiling finished in vibrant colors, turning the corridor into a sensory pathway that stimulates creativity and imagination. These design elements establish an affective geography calibrated to the different stages of development.

The complex occupies its historical and architectural contexts with discretion and formal continuity. Massing and composition establish a measured dialogue with the local vernacular through the careful use of proportions, materials, and colors. The urban fabric therefore becomes an active part of the design. The building establishes visual connections with the medieval Valbona Castle and the Church of San Rocco, which rises above the structure, reinforcing the link with the historical landscape.

Along with its educational function, the center operates as a community hub. The large garden, loggias, and portico establish a permeable relationship between the building, the landscape, and the community. This outdoor space both extends the teaching areas and acts as a mediating element.
A multipurpose outdoor theater hosts performances and group activities, expanding the school’s reach into the public realm. The school is therefore also a permeable hub where the children’s daily routines overlap with the broader social environment.

In this project, space, education, community, and context are mutually defining. The Valbona Early Childhood Center establishes a model for educational infrastructure rooted in its site and designed to foster a sense of belonging and community life.
