Camposanto in the province of Modena is home to the new Arcobaleno municipal nursery school designed by Politecnica Ingegneria e Architettura. The building, set in a garden dotted with trees, can accommodate up to 23 children aged 12 to 36 months. The 350m2 single-storey volume has been laid out with the children’s education in mind, including an open space for free and collective activities, a workshop zone, a rest area and a large classroom. The veranda provides a sheltered outdoor area linked to the surrounding greenery. All the rooms overlook and face onto the garden, turning it into an effective extension of the indoor play and work areas. Environmental sustainability, architectural safety and service quality are the principles underlying the design.
Wood produced by LignoAlp is the predominant material for the structure, the indoor spaces and the external cladding. The rigid frame structure was partially prefabricated, ensuring minimal environmental impact but also a ‘guarantee’ of stability as it was tested during the manufacturing phase. For example, a major earthquake in 2012 neither damaged nor delayed the construction of the building. The interiors were designed focusing on colour use and the perception of natural and artificial light. The wood used for the ceiling, floors and furnishings adds comfort and habitability. The external envelope, made with horizontal wooden panels, provides excellent insulation, ensuring the building is in Class A. Moreover, the integrated thermal photovoltaic system on the roof produces 50% of the general energy demand, providing a further reason for the Class A certification.
