A Window on Lake Como

In the old center of Careno, a picturesque village in the municipality of Nesso on Lake Como, RM Architetture recently transformed two neighboring historic farm buildings into contemporary homes. Led by architect Riccardo Melchionna, this landmark project preserves each building’s historic identity while also reinterpreting it in modern architectural language. Both conversions – one on Via dei Monti and one on Via del Pontile – harmonize with the surrounding landscape, bridging past and present.

A landscape to be preserved

The renovation of the two buildings centered on their stone walls and timber roofs. The architects’ main challenge was to preserve and enhance these elements – both typical of the local rural architecture – by integrating contemporary solutions that improve spatial functionality and living comfort.

The work included stripping back the walls to the original masonry and meticulously restoring them to highlight the stonework. Local materials were used, including stone for terrace retaining walls and paving. This sustainable approach reduced environmental impact by reusing on-site materials while strengthening the project’s relationship with the surrounding landscape.

The project sensitively integrates into its lakeside setting, both preserving the historic value of the buildings and carefully reinterpreting it. Floor-to-ceiling glazing reinforces the dialogue between interior and exterior, offering panoramic lake views and allowing natural light to permeate every space.

The interior layout was rethought to emphasize views of the landscape and ensure functional spaces. Both homes are on two levels, with the living area upstairs to capture the views and daylight and the sleeping quarters downstairs for privacy.

Two buildings: one historic soul

Once used for storage, the building on Via dei Monti retains its roots and historic character, with the expansion following the original walls and roofline. The result is seamless integration with the existing structure. Inside, the first floor is home to an intimate, welcoming bedroom, while the upper level comprises a large open-plan living space with an open-plan kitchen.

A key focus of the renovation of the Via del Pontile building was reorganizing the spaces by connecting the previously separate levels with the addition of internal stairs. New windows on the street façade and two French doors opening onto the rear courtyard not only improve natural light inside but also reinforce the visual continuity with the lake and surrounding landscape. The result is an ongoing dialogue between inside and out.
