Established in 2021 by Rubens Menin among the vineyards of the Douro Valley, Gouvinhas, Portugal, MWC — Menin Wine Company combines all the right conditions for producing high-quality wines. The estate, designed by Arnaldo and João Barbosa, makes full use of the natural topography of the site by placing the grape receiving area at the highest point with bottling and dispatch taking place at a lower level.

The design team focused on minimizing the building’s volumetric impact and preserving the valley’s unique landscape. For this reason, three of the four sides of the building are below grade. As well as reducing the building’s visual impact, this takes advantage of the cooler underground temperatures, which are ideal for the storage and barrel aging of wine.Menin Wine Company - Arnaldo Barbosa, João Barbosa © João Morgado, courtesy l'autore

Comprising pigmented concrete in tones reminiscent of wine lees and the vineyards’ autumn leaves, along with local slate and wood – all recurring themes in traditional local cellars – the exterior façade further helps the structure blend into its surroundings, while emphasizing the harmony between the architecture and the landscape.

Functional, elegant spaces

The building, used exclusively for wine production using estate-grown grapes, occupies several levels and comprises three main areas: grape receiving, winemaking, and barrel aging. There are also staff facilities, tasting rooms, and laboratories.

From the entrance, a route leads to the winemaking area with its presses and vats, and then to the storage and pomace pressing areas. On the level below are the cellars with vats and barrels. A central stairway connects the levels, optimizing space and regulating interior circulation.Menin Wine Company - Arnaldo Barbosa, João Barbosa © João Morgado, courtesy l'autore

The interiors feature a muted color palette with whites and beiges combined with materials such as wood and stone. Extensive glazing provides abundant daylighting while maintaining visual continuity with outdoors.Menin Wine Company - Arnaldo Barbosa, João Barbosa © João Morgado, courtesy l'autore

On the lower levels are an office, laboratory, tasting room, restrooms, a kitchen/dining room, and a first aid room, offering functional amenities for both staff and visitors.
