Barn-inspired firehouse in Dolní Jirčany
By Editorial Staff -

In the northwestern area of Dolní Jirčany, a striking new firehouse has emerged as a symbol of community, functionality, and architectural sensitivity. Designed by SOA architekti, the firehouse seamlessly blends the traditional barn shape with modern materials and techniques.

Positioned on one edge of the village, its design respects the area's scale and character, acting as a bridge between private and public domains. The translucent façade with large openings establishes a visual connection with the surrounding context and creates a thoughtful transition between residential and public spaces.La caserma dei pompieri ispirata all’architettura rurale ©Alex Shoots Buildings, courtesy of SOA architekti

Its gabled roof and rectangular volume echo the character of the SOA-designed Elementary School across the street. The strategic location also ensures immediate access to transport infrastructure, which is crucial for the volunteer firefighters to execute swift and effective responses.

Layered design concept and duality of materials

From the outset, the design team envisioned a structure that combines operational efficiency with architectural ingenuity. Central to this vision is the separation of three distinct temperature zones: the exterior, the garage, and the interior building. This zoning not only optimises functionality but also forms the basis of the building’s aesthetic and material choices.La caserma dei pompieri ispirata all’architettura rurale ©Alex Shoots Buildings, courtesy of SOA architekti

The firehouse comprises a steel-framed hall with a translucent polycarbonate façade that provides protection for firefighting vehicles while still allowing natural light to permeate the space. This transparent envelope creates a visual connection to the surrounding environment, enhanced by a large window on the eastern façade.La caserma dei pompieri ispirata all’architettura rurale ©Alex Shoots Buildings, courtesy of SOA architekti

Within the polycarbonate shell, a cross-laminated timber structure serves as the backbone of the facility. The CLT panels are left exposed on the interior surfaces, showcasing their natural texture, while their garage-facing sides are insulated with wood-fibre boards and clad in pine plywood. The internal wooden structure contrasts the translucent outer layer for its warmth and solidity.La caserma dei pompieri ispirata all’architettura rurale ©Alex Shoots Buildings, courtesy of SOA architekti

The staircase designs further reflect the duality of materials: an interior staircase crafted from bent teardrop sheet metal contrasts with an exterior galvanized steel staircase featuring perforated treads and landings.

Strengthening community bonds

More than just a facility for firefighting operations, the building stands as a testament to community cohesion. Its strategic design not only enhances the effectiveness of the volunteer fire department but also reinforces Dolní Jirčany’s commitment to sustainable and innovative development.

In the new firehouse of Dolní Jirčany, the SOA architekti design overcomes functionality and becomes a beacon of resilience, collaboration, and thoughtful architecture.
