I-Park, three buildings in one: research architectural adaptability
By Editorial Staff -

I-Park is a new multi-story building designed by Elodie Nourrigat and Jacques Brion, from NBJ Architects, in close collaboration with the city of Montpellier, local businesses, architect Jean Nuovel, and Pragma, the promoter of the project.

The project was conceived as a layered monolith, whose levels are punctuated by balconies that extend around the perimeter. Every apartment in the building has a view either across the adjacent park or the river.

What makes the project unique is the underlying commitment to studying and experimenting with the architectural opportunities offered by the Mediterranean climate. This is why the project required contributions from specialized professionals, with prototypes created so they could develop the most effective ways to capitalize on the local climate.

The design takes advantage of the possibilities offered by stamped concrete and the environmental adaptability provided by a double skin façade. The complex is actually a sequence of three interacting buildings, each of which was designed specifically for its unique orientation. So, while the elevations of the buildings that overlook the city are mainly glazed, those that face onto the park are planted with abundant vegetation.
