Studio Marco Piva focused on monumentality, luxury, practicality, design and attention to detail in its project to revamp Milan’s Excelsior Hotel Gallia. This elegant balance between history and contemporary uses touches of past Milanese architecture, hints at design greats and looks to Milan as a symbol of progress, and a place of industrial and metropolitan glimpses. The design for all parts of the hotel is drawn together by the care for materials, finishings and colors to produce spaces where guests can enjoy the sensations, “emotions” and unique features of the various different areas. Technology plays a key role to improve the display areas, meeting and conference rooms, and even the guest rooms. The latter count 235, with 29 types of standard rooms and 5 types of suites, plus a presidential and a royal suite. In the suites, the bathrooms provide an experience of excellence in wellness, with fully functional hammams in the space normally reserved for a simple shower. For this part of the project, Studio Marco Piva worked with Effegibi, which provided both the products and technology to produce these elements that were carefully designed to fit seamlessly and coherently into such private, relaxing bathrooms. This necessitated adapting the hammams to fit the style and size of the bathrooms. Effegibi is a leader in the technology for heat and steam in wellness applications, and it used this expertise to fit Easysteam and Touch&Steam steam generators on the walls, without requiring a specific technical compartment. This is an essential aspect in areas were space is at a premium, but the performance levels for the Turkish bath, aromatherapy and chromotherapy must be up to professional standards. In the 1,000 sq m royal suite - the Katara suite -, the spacious bathroom for one of the four bedrooms has a sauna and hammam facing each other. The Sky crystal door and walls allow a view of the interiors, with the sauna clad in Hemlock wood, contrasting with the marble used for the floors and walls in the hammam that recall the large washbasin unit. The Touch&Steam generator in the hammam is a fusion of design and technology with clean lines, serigraphed and backlit glass, and touch controls that are easy and intuitive to use. The sauna has a chromotherapy feature and an especially light design because the exterior wall is see-through. The use of Effegibi saunas and hammams in the suites really added formal coherence, showing how versatile they are and that they can fit into even true design settings.
