Centro Botín in Santander (Spain) is a museum complex that was designed in a joint project with Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) and Luis Vidal + Arquitectos. Lightness underscores the entire design, with the complex divided into two volumes that rest on pillars, with a fully-glazed section on the ground floor that visually removes all architectural barriers and symbolically connects the museum to the city. The sheer amount of glass made it essential that careful consideration be given to protection from the sun’s rays, resulting in about 300 interior and exterior blinds being provided by Resstende. These blinds were far more than a simple addition to the project, being used as an integral part of the overall design to make sure the light was filtered properly to make every space optimally usable. The designers worked with experts from Resstende to find the ideal technical solution to the multiple requirements: roller blinds, in this case. This option was practical, but also strategic as the amount of light can be regulated and so the artworks can be protected. Once the general solution had been found, each environment was examined and four different models and fabrics were selected to provide sufficient solar screening and acoustic insulation. The ground floor has shops, restaurants and recreational spaces, so motorized Dallas CT110 roller blinds were chosen, with a white Novo Acoustics fabric. For the double-height façade on the main volumes, three different screen solutions were used, each adapted specifically for this project: Extreme, Ress Flex and ZIP. The latter was fully integrated into the uprights of the windows. The Extreme system was mounted on the outside of the building, with Sunscreen Satiné 5500 anti-glare fabric in white/grey. Internally, for the ZIP and Ress Flex roller blinds, a Karellis fabric in grey was used, with 100% blackout, and a translucent white fabric that was chosen specifically because it helps diffuse light through the expansive museum environments.
