Led by Studio di architettura C+D, the recent expansion of Ricci Casa’s Bologna offices was a response to the need to enlarge workspaces within a typical exposed brick masonry residential building.

An addition in the spirit of the building’s origins

This intervention involved an “addition” superimposed on the original volume and connected to it by a glazed link that functions as both a transitional element and a visual connection. A solid exposed brick masonry base supports two upper volumes inspired by shipping containers, referencing the industrial context. The first volume rests on the base with a pronounced cantilever that overhangs the entrance, while the second passes through it and down to the first floor.Uffici Ricci Casa - C+D Architetti Associati © Guido De Vincentis Photography, courtesy C+D Architetti Associati

Dialogue with the existing building
is reinforced by material continuity. Inside, the elevator shaft – the connective core between the two masses – is clad in brick, establishing a visual and tactile link with the original masonry and underscoring the design team’s intent to establish a deep link with the building’s history.

Focus on environmental well-being

Besides aesthetic and formal impact, the project emphasizes environmental well-being in the workspaces, addressing every pertinent aspect to ensure maximum comfort for occupants. To favor visual and thermal comfort, the ingress of natural light is modulated by a perforated metal screen that acts both as façade cladding and solar shading, optimizing light and heat gain.Uffici Ricci Casa - C+D Architetti Associati © Guido De Vincentis Photography, courtesy C+D Architetti Associati

The envelope, comprising autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, and a low-velocity HVAC system ensure high hygrothermal performance throughout the year. Polymer flooring, acoustic wall panels, and lighting fixtures that function as acoustic baffles also ensure a high level of acoustic comfort. Complementing the commitment to environmental sustainability, the building is equipped with a photovoltaic system that provides energy autonomy.
